NPD Display Search analyst Richard Shim said that Amazon will release at least three follow-up models of its existing Kindle Fire, which is being called the "Kindle Fire 2". The production of the rumoured device will start this August, just in time for a fall launch. It is expected that the upcoming Amazon Kindle will have a 7-inch display, brining better resolution and 4G wireless compatibility.
Previously to this, there were speculations that Kindle Fire 2 is in the works and was rumoured that the tablet will cost $199, pushing the current model to $149.
There have also been previous rumours stating that Amazon has been working on an 8.9 and 10.1-inch tablet. However, plans have now changed and the online retailer ceased the production of the 8.9-inch tablet. On the other hand, the 10.1-inch Kindle Fire 2, is set to be released as early as the fourth quarter of this year.
The Three Amazon Kindle Fire 2 models:
- 1024 x 600-display without camera
- 1280 x 800-display with camera
- 1280 x 800-display with camera and 4G connectivity
Expected Features and Specs
The next-generation Kindle Fire will use either Texas instrument OMAP chips or NVIDIA's quad-core Tegra 3 processors. Its screen will also show off a pixel density of 216 pixels per inch, which is similar to the Google Nexus 7 but much higher than the first Kindle 170 ppi.
Pricing is still unknown, although there's a bigger chance that the upcoming devices will be places in the low-end market just like the original model.
Besides tablets, Amazon is supposed to be building their first smartphone, set to compete against Apple's iPhone. It is still unknown which mobile operating system will Amazon use. However, there were speculations that the handset will be sold at a loss, just like with most of Amazon-branded devices.
When Amazon first released the Kindle Fire last year, it took off with an amazing start. But the demand for the device quickly decreased because customer satisfaction was only half of those who were pleased with Apple's third-generation iPad.
