Ok, since SOPA and PIPA, people have been thinking that the threat to internet free speech has become less serious. The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is the latest internet censorship to hit the U.S Congress. Unless the American people start speaking now, the bill could in fact be passed.
CNET, the popular technology news website that was one of many who spoke up against SOPA and PIPA and is also one of many now sounding the alarm about CISPA!
So, what will CISPA do if passed?
CISPA will remove all the legal barriers that currently stop internet service providers, government agencies and others from arbitrarily spying on internet users. The name "Cybersecurity," a term that is undefined in the bill, CISPA will allow internet users to be surveilled by the government without a search warrant, which is a violation of users' constitutional civil liberties. So basically, websites like Google, Facebook and Twitter can intercept emails, text messages and other private information that might be considered a threat to "Cybersecurity". The government can also demand access to the information even if it has nothing to do with copyright infringement, which is one of the biggest excuses why the bill was put there in the first place.
Act now! Stop CISPA, the latest threat to internet free speech!!!
