The New Stuff

Looper - Film Review

Undoubtedly, 'Looper' is one of the most sophisticated films this year. 'Looper' provides a phenomenal sequence of events fixated around the ability to time travel. The catch however, is that it hasn't yet been invented for another 30 years. The idea of time can be deceptive, the mistakes we make now are in the past, they cannot be changed, yet a single act of absurdity can bring our future crashing down, destroying both dreams and promising futures. The audience is constantly reminded of time with the regular ticking sound of an assassins pocket watch, which reminds us of the idea of predestination; as we watch marked targets, send back 30 years in the past to await their rather insouciant death.

'Looper' revolves around time travel. In 'Looper', time travel was invented in the year 2074, yet swiftly after invention, it was outlawed. Yet, only the largest criminal organisations' continue to use time travel in "secret" to send back targets, who are sent incapacitated and hooded for death, back thirty years in the past to 2044 and killed with a blast of a blunderbuss, wielded by a 'looper'. A 'looper' is an assassin who is rewarded with silver bars for every kill they make. 'Looper' stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the main protagonist Joe, a 'looper' and Bruce Willis as Joe, thirty years in the future; as well as a rather gutsy, country women played by Emily Blunt.

Without divulging too far into the intricacies of the plot, Joe finds himself faced with a problematic situation as his next marked target somewhat reassembles somebody remarkably familiar. ‘Looper’s’ are governed by a 'simple' regulation, whatever you do, "never let your target escape”, which seems pretty straightforward as the targets arrived tied and hooded, unless of course the target is in fact your future self. As a ‘looper’, when an organisation decides to fire you, it is essentially that, however they don't hire someone else to do it, they send your future self-back into the past to be meet with a raucous bang of a blunderbuss, wielded by no other than your thirty years younger self. When they decide to severe the contract, they kill of the ‘looper’s’ future, as they call it "closing the loop". Yet, ironically, as a ‘looper’ you only find out after you have released the trigger, with a swift reward of gold bars and thirty years of freedom up until your fixed, unavoidable death, awaits you.

‘Looper’ seamlessly interweaves around each character, as older Joe sets out in his hunt for the ‘Rainmaker’ and younger Joe sets out to find his older self, while Sara, the rather bold, self-reliant county mother is caught up in Joe’s mess as he lets his “target escape”. However a unusual twist is in store, as each of the main characters congregate together as Sara’s young boy isn’t exactly who we think he is.
