The New Stuff

Max Payne on iOS?!

Max Payne, a physiologically disturbed NYPD detective who's wife and child were killed in a connection with the Valkyr drugs case. The game was released in 2001 (various dates for different consoles) and was extremely well received by critics, with the average rating for the game ranging in the high 80% to the low 90%. The game picked up several awards (one was a BAFTA), and the PC version was regarded as the best one to play. 11 years on and it has been released on iOS, and later on in the year it will be released on Android. It costs only £2 ($2.99) and if you wish to purchase it Click here. I was eagerly anticipating this game, as I am such a fan of the series, and I wanted to play it on my iPhone. I must admit that there were some aspects of the game that I wasn't jumping up and down with joy, such as the fact that the game is 1.11Gb's big which is 1 16th of the storage space on my phone. Although I didn't ponder on this fact, so I purchased it purely from the fact that original was so good, and it was only £2. After the lengthy download I then came across another issue, but this is only down to the fact that it is an extremely big file for a mobile device. The problem was the length of time that it took to actually load the game, it took around 2 minutes, and that is an extremely long time for modern day games. Another fault, well its more of a niggle, is the position of the controls (it may only be for the iPhone/iPod, because I have not played it on an iPad) they are very close together, and after playing it for a while your thumbs begin to ache slightly.

Although criticisms aside, this game is absolutely fantastic, the graphics are even better than they were on the playstation, the retina display probably helps there. The storyline is better than I remember, and this game really does show what iOS games are capable of. The bullet time is also in the game, and I think that it needed to be, it is one of the defining features of any Max Payne game. If you are not going to take my word for it, and would like proof of the actual quality gameplay on the iPhone, then Click here. As you can see from the gameplay, it is fantastically engrossing, when I first purchased this game I sat on it for at least 2 hours straight. If you are willing to look past the slight issues that this game has, and you can sacrifice a gigabyte of memory on your phone, and £2 from your bank account, this game is an absolute must for any fan of Max Payne or Shooter in general. I hope that Rockstar now consider making The Fall Of Max Payne (the second one) for iOS and Android, because I believe that it can only get better from here on out, although they have set the bar very high, but Rockstar being Rockstar, they never dissapoint.
