The Iconfactory, the developer of Twitterrific and Flare for Mac, has released a major update of its Twitter client for iOS. Twitterrific 5 debuted the App Store tonight and features a completely redesigned interface, themes and font customization, cross-device synchronization, and more. 

As in previous versions, Twitterrific offers all of the basic Twitter client functions like timeline browsing, access to mentions and direct messages, search, and list access. New features include two themes, Light and Dark, that can be switched manually or done automatically at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm every day. Twitterrific 5 also offers five font choices and nine font sizes, as well as control over line spacing.

Microsoft recently decided to phase out Windows Live Messenger in favor of Skype, finally putting the $8.5 billion acquisition to good use, which allows users to Skype with Messenger, Hotmail, and Outlook.com contacts.

Start using and enjoying the update by signing into Skype with their Microsoft account and all the information, including history and contacts, will immediately be merged with their Skype account.

The update also brings other features, like the ability to edit individual messages by tapping and holding down on a message. The update has included emoticons, both animated and stagnant, that can be placed on IMs on Retina-equipped devices.

Skype for Windows 8 Phone Preview



Microsoft has been hinting the new Skype app for the recent release Windows 8 Phone. It is all now becoming reality because Microsoft has now released a preview of the new Skype application for the all new Windows 8 Phone.

According to Microsoft, there are a bunch of new features that inclue the app running in the background, incoming calls that match the style of regular phone conversations, and lock screen notifications.

To get the app, all you have to do is search for it in the Windows Store; or WPcentral says you should be able to download it by following this link. If you want to know more about the app's features and improvements, you can watch the video below.

Amazon Appstore launches in UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain

Amazon has just rolled out its Appstore in five European markets. The store is a rival to Google Play, and sells Android apps for phones and tablets. Hopefully, we will start to see exclusive titles on the store. The store is now live in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. With its Ecosystem now in place, in the largest markets, there is very little stopping Amazon from brining its kindle Fire tablet - or its rumoured smartphone - over to Europe.

A Facebook employee named Jonathan Dann has written a blog post detailing how the company's iOS engineering team designed earlier Facebook for iPhone apps and the coding that was required to rewrite the new Facebook 5.0 app.

Developers will love and others will be interested in how one of the most popular iPhone apps gets made, so its definitely worth the read.

Here's an excerpt:
One of the biggest advantages we've gained from building on native iOS has been the ability to make the app fast. Now, when you scroll through your news feed on the new Facebook for iOS, you'll notice that it feels much faster than before. One way we have achieved this is by re-balancing where we perform certain tasks. For example, in iOS, the main thread drives the UI and handles touch events, so the more work we do on the main thread, the slower the app feels. Instead, we take care to perform computationally expensive tasks in the background. This means all our networking activity, JSON parsing, NSManagedObject creation, and saving to disk never touches the main thread.

To give another example, we use Core Text to lay out many of our strings, but layout calculations can quickly become a bottleneck. With our new iOS app, when we download new content, we asynchronously calculate the sizes for all these strings, cache our CTFramesetters (which can be expensive to create), and then use all these calculations later when we present the story into our UITableView.

Finally, when you start Facebook for iOS, you want to see your news feed, not a loading spinner. To provide the best experience possible, we now show previously-cached content immediately. But this introduces a new problem: If you have a lot of stories in your news feed, UITableView throws a small spanner in the works by calling the delegate method -tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: for each story in your news feed in order to work out how tall to make its scrollbar. This would result in the app loading all the story data from disk and calculating the entire story layout solely to return the height of the story, meaning startup would get progressively slower as you accumulate more stories.

The solution to this particular problem has two main parts. Firstly, when we do our initial asynchronous layout calculations, we also store the height of the story in Core Data. In doing so, we completely avoid layout calculation in -tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath:. Secondly, we've split up our "story" model object. We only fetch the story heights (and a few other things) from disk on startup. Later, we fetch the rest of the story data, and any more layout calculations we have to do are all performed asynchronously.

Facebook has released a completely rewritten iOS app that is significantly faster compared to the old version. With more Facebook users connecting to the social network via their app, having a speedy app is pretty much essential. News that the update was forthcoming was first reported back in June.

With the updated version, Facebook's engineers have dumped the HTML5-based app and rebuilt it using Objective-C programming to make it perform more like a native iOS app.

“People have different expectations when it comes to using Facebook for iOS,” Mick Johnson, Facebook iOS mobile product manager, told me in an interview this morning. “They expect a level of performance and speed that just wasn’t there.”

Johnson says that the largest pain points — scrolling through the feed, photos and loading the app — will all be much faster, by a factor of three. Also, Facebook mobile developers working on the three separate iOS apps — Facebook, Camera and Messenger — all all now sharing a code base with each other, so Messenger and Camera are actually running inside of the proper Facebook app, bringing many of those features to Facebook for iOS. Pretty much everyone is on Facebook now, so this is a well needed app to keep up-to-date with your Facebook notifications, chat to friends, browse pages and more all from this app.







Mint

Free

Mint's Android tablet app is pretty much the same as its iOS app, including a homescreen that focuses on charts and graphs letting you see your current overall financial picture at a glance. The latest version lets you create and edit budgets right from within the app.







Pulse

Free

Pulse pulls in news from thousands of sources and presents them in an amazing format, complete with art work. You can easily customise it by browsing lists sources and tapping the plus sign that interests you. This creates a completely personalised news page and delivers every story as it happens, so your always up-to-date. The app also contains news and information about any Jelly-bean related fixes.

While you can easily download the Official Twitter client for Android, TweetCaster has a much more fluent interface and takes better advantage of the Nexus 7. Who doesn't love comic books? If you are fans of Batman, Superman and Green Lantern, then you have waited a long time for this day to come, and now you can read all of the comics from your Nexus 7. You can also view the comics with choices from guided page views and full-page views.

Google play has over 4 million titles, but that doesn't come close to Amazon titles. The Kindle version takes advantage of the Nexus 7's screen - which is still one inch larger than all dedicated E Ink-based Kindles - and now offers more control of margins and line space. 






TED

Free

The official TED app brings over 1,200 TED talks straight to your Nexus 7 device, from tech wizards, business experts, and music legends, among others. Now, you can save each individual talks to the device for later viewing - even offline. The latest version includes a better video player for 7-inch tablets, as well as plenty of bug fixes.






Hulu Plus

Free; $7.99 per month

Hulu Plus is one of the biggest competitions to Netflix and as far as streaming movie and TV apps are concerned, both of them cost the same amount. There are a few differences in the available catalogues; Hulu offers full seasons of The Office, Modern Family, Battlestar Galactica, and Family Guy, among others. The latest version includes improved support for 7-inch tablets like the Nexus 7, and you can now sign up for a weeks trial in the app.

Lets say you are watching a movie or a TV show that you like and you would like to quickly see the actors in that show, you can easily and quickly do this right from your Nexus 7 devices. The IMDb's interface is highly optimised for tablet like the Nexus 7, and the latest update adds the ability to stream movie trailers in HD.

Finally audio now pauses whenever you unplug your headphones, instead of continuing to play out-loud through the tablet's speaker.

The amazing cloud-based music streaming service now contains over 15 million songs, all of which you can listen to on your Nexus 7. Unlike any other music streaming services, Spotify lets you set up playlists and choose all of your songs. Spotify has so many songs in its catalog, that it is in-fact possible you'll never need to buy music again.

This game was incredibly fun on smartphones, but give it a amazing 7-inch display and watch how impressive the game gets. It's amazing and plays great, it offers higher-resolution textures on multi-core tablets like the Nexus 7. The game still defaults to a slightly lower resolution than what the screen is capable of, but that could change in the future. If you crank the sharpness slider to "native" and you saw impressive smooth frame rates, if not always at 60 per second.

Free

Dropbox is probably one of the most key app that you need on your Nexus 7 device. You can access your important documents from anywhere, and now, even your Nexus 7. You get 2GB in the free account, and that it quite a bit given that the maximum memory of the device is 8GB to 16GB. The latest version features upload notifications and custom-tailored video streaming, and the app also automatically uploads photos and videos in the background over Wi-Fi on the Nexus 7.






Facebook

Free

Pretty much everyone is on Facebook now, so this is a well needed app to keep up-to-date with your Facebook notifications, chat to friends, browse pages and more all from this app.







Mint

Free

Mint's Android tablet app is pretty much the same as its iOS app, including a homescreen that focuses on charts and graphs letting you see your current overall financial picture at a glance. The latest version lets you create and edit budgets right from within the app.







Pulse

Free

Pulse pulls in news from thousands of sources and presents them in an amazing format, complete with art work. You can easily customise it by browsing lists sources and tapping the plus sign that interests you. This creates a completely personalised news page and delivers every story as it happens, so your always up-to-date. The app also contains news and information about any Jelly-bean related fixes.

While you can easily download the Official Twitter client for Android, TweetCaster has a much more fluent interface and takes better advantage of the Nexus 7. Google play has over 4 million titles, but that doesn't come close to Amazon titles. The Kindle version takes advantage of the Nexus 7's screen - which is still one inch larger than all dedicated E Ink-based Kindles - and now offers more control of margins and line space.

The official TED app brings over 1,200 TED talks straight to your Nexus 7 device, from tech wizards, business experts, and music legends, among others. Now, you can save each individual talks to the device for later viewing - even offline. The latest version includes a better video player for 7-inch tablets, as well as plenty of bug fixes.






Hulu Plus

Hulu Plus is one of the biggest competitions to Netflix and as far as streaming movie and TV apps are concerned, both of them cost the same amount. There are a few differences in the available catalogues; Hulu offers full seasons of The Office, Modern Family, Battlestar Galactica, and Family Guy, among others. The latest version includes improved support for 7-inch tablets like the Nexus 7, and you can now sign up for a weeks trial in the app.

And Pandora's discovery algorithms - which break down down by tempo, chords and other features in a much more granular fashion than relying on mere genre - are still the best in the business. Finally audio now pauses whenever you unplug your headphones, instead of continuing to play out-loud through the tablet's speaker.

Riptide GP

This game was incredibly fun on smartphones, but give it a amazing 7-inch display and watch how impressive the game gets. It's amazing and plays great, it offers higher-resolution textures on multi-core tablets like the Nexus 7. The game still defaults to a slightly lower resolution than what the screen is capable of, but that could change in the future. If you crank the sharpness slider to "native" and you saw impressive smooth frame rates, if not always at 60 per second. 



The widely used email client Sparrow has been acquired by Google today.

Sparrow was first launched on the Mac, but now an iPhone version was released earlier this year. Leca also said that Sparrow's products will continue to be made available with "support and critical update", but Sparrow does not plan to release new. There is still no word whether the Push email support (which was promised this year) will make its way to the iOS app, or if it will be delayed or it will never make it's way to the iOS app.

The widely used email client Sparrow has been acquired by Google today.

Apple Updates iPhoto to Version 9.3.1 With Minor Bug Fixes

Checkmark is a handy new app for your iPhone from Snowman. Checkmark is basically the same as Apple's Reminders with unique, useful features. Checkmark is also apparently faster than Apple's Reminders.

At Facebook, the Facebook engineers have been hard at work rewriting the social network iOS app to make it faster. The app, which has been severely criticised by many users for being extremely slow, was built using the HTML5 Web-based programming language. 

It makes the app much easier for Facebook's engineering team to port to other platforms like Android or Windows Mobile - but it fails to take advantage of the iOS operating system.

Facebook knows this and is giving the app a complete rewrite in Objective-C, turning it into a true iPhone app and making it much faster. Nick Bilton, reporting for The New York Times:
"I had the opportunity to see the yet-unreleased iPhone application and its fast. Blazing fast. The two developers I spoke with said the new application is currently being tested by Facebook developers and is expected to be updated this summer. Don’t get too excited, though. The new Facebook app looks exactly like the old one. Facebook hasn’t changed the design, but rather focused on speed."
According to Bilton, the new and improved Facebook app should be released next month.

Facebook Dropping HTML5 to Speed Up iOS App

At Facebook, the Facebook engineers have been hard at work rewriting the social network iOS app to make it faster. The app, which has been severely criticised by many users for being extremely slow, was built using the HTML5 Web-based programming language.

Fans of the social sharing app 'foursquare' can rejoice today! The namesake app for the location-based social networking service has been update to version 5.0, with a lot of new and exciting features, and lets not forget a redesigned user interface. 
Foursquare is a free app and has increased the number of check-ins that your friends can see, so now you can see what your friends are doing all around the world. One of the new features in 5.0 is "Top Picks". The "Top Picks" button shows the best places ( as voted on by other foursquare users) to shop, get food or drinks, see the sights or enjoy nightlife. 

In previous versions of the foursquare app, check-ins were accomplished by tapping a specific button at the bottom of the foursquare screen and then picking your location from a list of the nearest locations. In 5.0, the button is now on the top of the app that displays a small map of local check-in spots as well as a list of locations. 

Overall, the updated app seems to be faster and the new user interface is a decent improvement.

Google today has just announced that they have acquired Quickoffice. Quickoffice was originally founded in 2002 and known for its productivity suite for iPhone and iPad.
