As we all expected, Apple has announced the iPhone 5 at Apple's media event. The iPhone 5 is made entirely out of glass and aluminium enclosure that's 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 and weighs 20% lighter than the previous models at 112 grams. It has a 4-inch 1136 x 640 pixel (326 pixels per inch) Retina Display giving it the same width as the iPhone 4S but taller.

The phone also features in-cell technology that was previously rumoured that allows the display to be even thinner since the touch sensors are integrated into the display itself instead of a separate layer.

The new iPhone also has LTE connectivity using a single chip for voice and data and a dynamic antenna that can switch connections as needed. The LTE connectivity will be compatible with all of the major cellular networks in the US plus others in Europe and around the world. The iPhone 5 also gets improved Wi-Fi connectivity with dual-channel 802.11(n) capability.

The new iPhone also has a new A6 processor that is twice as fast as the iPhone 4S (which carries the A5 chip). The A6 processor is also 22% smaller and more efficient. The battery life on the iPhone 5 will offer 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or browsing or 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing or 225 hours of standby time. 

The iPhone 5's rear-facing camera doesn't get  resolution bump, keeping it at an 8-megapixel sensor, though the sensor is thinner and the lens cover is sapphire crystal. The camera function gets a new dynamic low-light mode and faster photo capture. The front-facing FaceTime camera will offer 270p HD video capture with the ability to take photos while recording video. 

The iPhone 5 gets an additional microphone, bringing the total to three compared to the two present in the iPhone 4S. The microphones will be located on the bottom, front and rear of the iPhone 5 to improve voice recognition and noise cancellation. Apple's new EarPods earphones are also included. 

The iPhone 5 will come in black or white. The black will have a anodised aluminium back while the white version will have a raw aluminium back. The iPhone 5 will cost $199, $299, and $399 for the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models with a contract. The iPhone 4S will be reduced to $99 and the iPhone 4 will be free with a contract. 

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 will begin on Friday, September 14 and apple will begin shipping the new device on September 21 in nine countries including the US and Canada. The iPhone 5 will become available in additional countries next month and in 100 countries by the end of the year.

CNET reports that production has begun on 13.3-inch, 2560x1600 displays that will be incorporated into Apple's forthcoming smaller Retina MacBook Pro.

Production has begun of a 2,560-by-1,600 pixel density display that will land on a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim told CNET. 

"The supply chain indications are that it's for a MacBook Pro 13.3 -- not a MacBook Air," said Shim. 

Displays are being made by Samsung, LGD, and Sharp, he said.

Shim indicates that launch supplies for the 13-inch Retina Displays will be higher than seen for the 15-inch displays incorporated into the first Retina MacBook Pro released back in June, this means that there is a greater popularity of the 13-inch models compared to the 15-inch models.

"With 15.4 it's production of a few hundred thousand units versus one to two million for the 13.3," he said. That 13.3-inch production began in the third quarter.

Apple has been rumoured to be working on a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro for a few months now, now with mass production of the displays for the forthcoming machines now underway, it seems that Apple may be on track to meet that timeframe.

CNET reports that production has begun on 13.3-inch, 2560x1600 displays that will be incorporated into Apple's forthcoming smaller Retina MacBook Pro.

Apple has just released an update for the June MacBook Pro line-up, including the new Retina Display MacBook Pro. The update fixes:

Apple never really advertises specific Mac products in television ads. But with the revolutionary new form factor and the breakthrough Retina Display on the MacBook Pro, Apple is clearly wanting to draw a widespread of attention to this amazing product.

With WWDC 2012 coming up tomorrow, we thought that we should have a rumour round up of all the rumours that we have featured.

Apple has already announced that it will be previewing iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion at WWDC on Monday, and Apple is also expected to introduce a number of new Macs with additional improvements.

iOS 6

Ok, first up is iOS 6. Apple hasn't really been keeping this a secret, but it will play a major role in WWDC 2012. As we have mentioned in our blog, Apple has been putting up Banners featuring the un-announced version of iOS. We will expect that Apple will go over a few new features in detail at the conference. We think that one of the biggest features will be Apples own mapping solution which has been reported by multiple sites including us. Here is a list of rumoured features for the latest version of iOS:

OS X Mountain Lion

OS X Mountain lion is another product that we all know that Apple will be discussing at the conference. Back in February, Apple announced the new version of OS X. The features included: Notification Center, Messages, Reminders, Game Center, and AirPlay. We have also mentioned some other features that may included in OS X:

• OS X Mountain Lion Adding Offline Safari Reading List and Dictation to Mac
• iOS-like automatic downloads for Apps

iCloud

Apple CEO Tim Cook has said that iCloud is a strategy for the next decade. We have seen some of the new features that Apple is planning to introduce to iCloud in iOS 6 because of a mistake from Apple:

• Support for photo sharing, notes and reminders 

MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, Mac Pros, iMacs and Retina-Display

Rumours have be stirring around that Apple may introduce a new line of Macs at the WWDC. We have also heard that Retina-class displays on Apple's new Macs maybe coming. All of these claims may not happen next week because most of these TV claims have come from a single uncorroborated source.

So we have been hearing a lot about the next-generation iPhone. The iPhone is rumoured to be taller with a 4-inch display but not making the phone any wider. We have also featured many incredible mockups of the new next-generation iPhone, but with the highest-profile leak so far being a hands-on-video that shows the back cover of the device, as well as a smaller dock connector and the headphone jack being at the bottom of the device. However, it is unlikely that Apple will introduce the next-generation iPhone at next weeks WWDC. Most observers believe that Apple will stick to the September/October timeframe which was seen last year with the iPhone 4S.

The one that is probably going to see the biggest upgrade is the Macbook Pro. There have been lots of rumours spreading around the globe that it might be getting Retina Display. Apple's iMac and Macbook Air lines are also considered solid bets for upgrades next week. The Macbook Air is also getting the Retina Display but the iMac has been rumour to be gaining the feature sometime in the future.

If Apple is planning to only update four of its products, the Mac mini may get a refresh given that just-released Ivy Bridge chips that could also be appearing in the 13-inch Macbook Pro would be suitable for a Mac mini refresh.

Xeon E5 chips maybe suitable for the Mac Pro update. The chips have been available for several months now, so it wouldn't be a surprise that Apples Professional-level workstation will be getting that upgrade. It has been almost two years since the Mac Pro was since last update, so it may need a refresh.

There have also been rumoured that Apple may introduce new and updated accessories, but this remains unknown.
